Fayette County Schools Continue Excellence
By Linda Hangen | August 6, 2008
Fayette County is the only metro Atlanta school system in which all schools met federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards for 2008 under the federal No Child Left Behind act.
Fayette also is one of only a few Georgia school systems with 100 percent AYP rankings for the past five years. 2008 marked the 10th consecutive year that North Fayette Elementary and Burch Elementary met the AYP standards.
“Of the 34 systems in Georgia meeting AYP requirements in 2008, all the others have fewer than 10 schools compared to Fayette’s 28 schools,” noted Fayette school system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach.
The 2008 accomplishment is impressive, according to State School Superintendent Kathy Cox, since the percentage of students required to pass state tests in math, reading and English increased for all grade levels, and students were doing more difficult work and taking more rigorous tests.
