Going Green

By Mary Watts | January 16, 2009

Having  just earned the new NAR GREEN designation I thought you might be interested in a few key Green definitions to better understand the green movement.  The more we understand the better we can be in doing our part to be better servants of our environment and know how we can improve our homes.  So here are three definitions to get started with:

  1. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) – A measurement of the overall cleanliness of the air in a building/home.  Good IAQ increases airflow and ventilation, as well as the physical and mental attentiveness of people in the building/home.  Poor IAQ can reduce people’s ability to concentrate, calculate, and memorize, as well as increase their exposure to harmful fumes, resulting in upper respiratory problems.  Building materials often impact IAQ.
  2. Rammed Earth Construction – A building technique involving dense compression of clay and dirt materials to create thick, flat surfaces, such as walls and floors.  This technique increases insulation and energy efficiency.
  3. Urban Infill – Redevelopment of sites in the core of metropolitan areas, improving existing infrastructure instead of engaging in new development.  This reuse of resources can result in cost savings, reduced travel and less construction pollution.

Quote of the Month – McGraw Hill’s Green Outlook study said “green building seems to be somewhat  insulated from the recession and is growing in spite of the market downturn.  The value of green construction increased five-fold from $10 billion in 2005 to as much as $49 billion this year, and could triple by 2013 to nearly $150 billion, the study reported.”

Please check back and see how you can get involved in the Green movement.  From small changes we can make to building your new home Green.
